Low-excitation blobs in the Magellanic Clouds

چکیده
Aims. We study an unknown, or very poorly known, interstellar H component in the Magellanic Clouds. This is the first study ever devoted to this class of objects, which we call Low-excitation blobs (LEBs). Methods. We used low-dispersion spectroscopy carried out at ESO to obtain emission line intensities of Hα, Hβ, and [O ] (λλ 4959+ 5007) for 15 objects in the Large Magellanic Cloud and 14 objects in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Results are displayed in excitation ([O ]/Hβ ratio) versus Hβ luminosity diagrams. Results. We show the presence of an LEB component in the Magellanic Clouds and study its relationship with the already known class of high-excitation blobs (HEBs). The newly found LEBs are lower excitation counterparts of HEBs and are powered by less massive exciting stars. Further study of LEBs is expected to provide new pieces of information for a better understanding the low mass end of the upper initial mass function in the Magellanic Clouds.

Regions in the Magellanic Clouds
Aims. We present a study of the mid-infrared properties and dust content of a sample of 27 H ii “blobs”, a rare class of compact H ii regions in the Magellanic Clouds. A unique feature of this sample is that even though these H ii regions are of high and low excitation they have nearly the same physical sizes ∼1.5–3 pc. Methods. We base our analysis on archival 3 – 8 μm infrared imagery obtaine...
متن کاملHigh Excitation Molecular Gas in the Magellanic Clouds
We present the first survey of submillimeter CO (J = 4 → 3) emission in the Magellanic Clouds. The survey is comprised of 15 6 × 6 maps obtained using the AST/RO telescope toward the molecular peaks of the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds. We have used these data to constrain the physical conditions in these objects, in particular their molecular gas density and temperature. We find that there...
متن کاملPlanetary Nebulae in the Magellanic Clouds
Selection effects in the search for planetary nebulae in the Magellanic Clouds have not seriously distorted the observed space distribution, but have affected the apparent excitation classes. A difference between the properties of the SMC and LMC planetaries remains. A group of high-excitation nebulae with strong lines of He and Ν has been isolated. If these are excluded, the helium abundance a...
متن کاملModel nebulae and determination of the chemical composition of the Magellanic Clouds.
An analysis of previously presented photoelectric spectrophotometry of HII regions (emission-line diffuse nebulae) in the two Magellanic Clouds is carried out with the aid of theoretical nebular models, which are used primarily as interpolation devices. Some advantages and limitations of such theoretical models are discussed. A comparison of the finally obtained chemical compositions with those...
متن کاملSearch for molecular gas in HVCs by HCO + absorption
High-Velocity Clouds (HVCs) have radial velocities that cannot be explained by the global Galactic rotation; their distances remain mostly unknown, and their true nature and origin are still a mystery. Some of them could be of galactic origin, or belong to tidal streams drawn by the Milky-Way/ Magellanic Clouds interaction, or could even be intergalactic clouds infalling onto the Local Group. I...
